Hallo, we are a family of three (the child is 8), and we want to travel to Latvija this summer. Last summer we enjoyed Lithuania (Ula, Merkys, Nemunas) and we werelucky to find maps and many other information in the internet.
But now, when I try to find similar information about Latvija, I am not very successfull. I can't find any good maps! And I can't find adresses of people, who lend canoes. Please, could you help with such information?
We would like to travel on Gauja for 3 to 4 days, and/or another nice river, were we could enjoy the wilderness, silence, wild animals ... What rivers/river streches could you recommend?
Sincerely yours, Michael
(please write directly to my email)

addition: we would prefer big canoes, where 3 people can sit in (in Lithuania we had a 'Taimen III'. It was good, but in wild water we would prefer a hard cover.
You just came to the site where you could find anything about canoe rentals and boating routes. Please click on the link "campo laivas" on the left and you'll get to the Campo commercial site. On the upper right corner there will be a language selection flag, so you could try to find out something that suits you. Some english pages are functional. We appologize - not all of the pages are translated, so come back on e-mail as soon you are concerned regarding dates and plans.

"in wild water" ... :)))) Latvijā, vasarā....
Thanks, the maršrutos-pages are very helpful! I am just reading...
But please, what about 3-seat-canoes? Do you have some?
Tomorrow I will buy a Latvian dictionary to translate this:

Yes we do. Take a look at this page: http://www.campo.laivas.lv/lv/inventars/canoe/?pg=Enigma
also here for 4-seater:
http://www.campo.laivas.lv/lv/inventars/canoe/?pg=Drago
or http://old.laivas.lv/en/inventars/kanoe/?pg=drago
We have more than 100 canoes in service, but due to the obstacles along the course not all types are available on every route. Please select the river first (both of the above suits Gauja routes particularly).
In latvian pages there is a list of available canoe models on the right, so you could turn to to latvian site for your selection - the structure of the site is identical, so you could at least to try to help yourself - pictures and prices don't need translation.
In case you plan for June or July, you could come later on after some time, say 2 weeks from now. We work on translation hard.

Yes, we will come in July...

Thank you, this will help even in the case of the prices (I do not quit understand, what is included in the prices). Valmiera - Sigulda 84km 3d Ls 224 sounds like a lot of money.
I only want to rent the boat, and the transport to the start and from the end point, nothing more.

??? perhaps there is a confusion, the price is for the complete 3-day route not for just a one day. So LVL 45 is the price for one 3-seater canoe (paddles, vests) including transportation of the boat to/from the route ends. This is to be multiplied by the number of canoes you need.
Sorry, now I have found your individual prices. Before I had looked to the table on page http://www.campo.laivas.lv/lv/marsruti/Citur_pasaule/?pg=Liellaiva, where I did not understand too much.
Yeah - that's a boat for 12 people :) the correct link is this one http://www.campo.laivas.lv/lv/marsruti/Vidzeme/?pg=GaujaVS

This was during the so terrible Soviet times. My question is: is this nice section still so crowded? During summer within the week (not weekend)? River Ula seems to me to be the most popular canoeing section in Lithuania, but we were nearly alone on the river and at the camp sites. What have we to expect? Terribly crowded or like at Ula?

I have difficulties printing out the special baltic characters of your site with Acrobat Web Capturer. This is especially bad for names of rivers and villages and a typial Encoding problem. Your site is ‹windows-1257› encodet (baltic charset of Windows). My Acrobat Web Capturer knows only ‹Western European› = ‹ISO-8859-1› and ‹Unicode UTF-8›. Perhaps you could change your encoding from ‹windows-1257› to ‹Unicode UTF-8› (if this is not too much work).
Or you could change the direct ‹Š› to ‹Š› or ‹&x0160›, so my Web Capturer would print all right.

That's strange, Ula is much more overpopulated than Gauja and perhaps you simply had a luck to paddle alone. And if so, any comparison to Gauja won't reflect the actual situation, but if fact we can't speak about "hundreds of boats". If Ula statistical load is about 600 boats a weekend, Gauja has 300 at its top season.
And this is not because Ula is better river than Gauja, there aren't that many beautiful rivers is Lithuania than we have here in Latvia.

It is not that easy to change the charset for multiple reasons, so don't expect this to happen. It is really too much volume and too much work. It is much more easier for you to install the proper character set with windows to see contents without code garbage.
